How much would you pay for a piece of art??
So I went to a Sotheby's auction on Wednesday... probably not a great idea considering it was below 0 degrees, I was sick..it was late..and I have a ton of work due.
Anyway, Sotheby's auction house is located along New Bond Street, and the day I went, they were selling contemporary art..think Andy Warhol. They sold Impressionist art on tuesday, Monet and the like, but I missed it. Too late.
Andy Warhol only sold for 30,000 pounds..only you say? Some other painting went for 4million pounds. A painting. There were bidders in the room, holding paddles with numbers..and there were bidders on the phone, who had representatives bid for them. Most of the paintings were bought by people not in the room..probably some rice oil tycoon who was holidaying in Barbados...
The room was high tech. There was a huge screen above us, converting the prices into HKD, Yen, USD and Euros..tells you where the rich people come from...
The auctioneer was a typical looking British guy, auctioning off the lots..and the crowd..well..mainly European, mainly well dressed and rich. We looked way out of place. Like. WAY out of place...asian, young, poorly dressed.....But it was quite an interesting experience..after all, after being sold, the art pieces disappear till the owner decides to sell it again...Is art a piece of investment? Better than stocks? Mmm.......
Oh, and by the way, the conversion to SGD is roughly 1:3. to USD is 1:2
