This could be controversial.
So today, during a meeting, we were deciding on who should be a "model" for our flyer. And of course, PSP being already WAY too asian and female, I told Lily (this cute little girl in our frat whos the same age as my sister) "well, you're white, you should do it" and everyone started laughing in an embarrassed manner. Well, yah sure so its odd saying something about race I guess. But I don't think I Would be insulted if someone of a different race told me "you should do xxx cos you are chinese and we need to reflect diversity"
I guess I would be if I were a minority race? Not insulted, but a little more sensitive...but to me its like hey, we all know that PSP is too Asian and so whats with all the "nervous laughter"?
Sometimes I feel that the American Asians here are WAY more Asian than I am. Why? Because I suppose being the majority race in Singapore gives me a new perspective on stuff Am Asians won't get. In addition, I feel like in Singapore, we have managed to fuse our Asian as well as westernized cultures together without losing too much of either. Wherelse here, it seems to be a choice between one or the other. Its either you are super proud of the fact you are Asiana nd become "Fobby" or you go the other way and become supremely Americanized.
I know race is a "sensitive" issue to some. But frankly, its only insulting if you dis the race. I mean white is white, black is black and chinese is chinese. Who cares? OF course if you pit "that stupid yellow chink" in one sentence, then I would say watch out..I am gonna hit you. If not...who cares?
Race is a fact. Its like asying the skinny girl or the guy with the mole. Well, to be at least. Its physical. And I think a majority race perspective is simply different from that of people who are not the majority.

haha, it's only a problem if you're saying something that associates a person with their race and that they should be acting a certain way. So I dunno what those PSP people are thinking, it's not like you were saying, "You're white and white people model, so you should be our model." I SUPPOSE people might be insulted if it was like the whole TOKEN minority deal...
