So. I made this observation. There are more Asians in Business, Engineering, MCB and Economics and more Whites in the Humanities (Lit, gEog, Hist). We're talking proportion here btw and this is NOT statistically proven for all you analytical types out there.
My Hypothesis is that Asians have a need for survival..basic survival..a need to be "practical" and earn their $$, be comfortable. They are still trying to develop, something true of many asian countries which have played catch up with western ones for the past decades. So the people have the same mentality too.
On the other hand, westerners are already well entrenched in society and the world They are the advance people in terms of technology, economy etc. Theres not much need for survival as they are already on top. You know what I mean? They have leisure to indulge in the humanities, which are seen as more cultured..better for the "soul" (I'm sorry if you find peace in Civil Engineering but this is a generalization here).
After all, John Adams said "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."
