Being Singaporean

I just chanced upon Mr brown's blog. Apparently he is a big hit with Singaporeans or something? As you can see, I'm kinda out of the loop. But that lead me to thinking about how my Singaporean identity was more obvious in America.

I don't understand why people say that we have no identity. We have one!
Its in Singlish ( the americans think we are are speaking another language), its in our food ( there is nothing so special as our food!), its in our mannerisms, its in the fact that we are more international ( a more international perspective since we are so small).
~Believe it or no, a lot of people in California haven't been out of California, much less out of USA. And they are oblivious to international news, its very isolated and introspective. Yes, this is the world superpower for you. No wonder George Bush is like that!

It is NOT in our kiasuism (or what PCK likes to promote cos Americans are equally if not more kiasu so why do we trumpet this thing that is nothing to be proud of?), not in the government promotion of Singaporean identity, and sadly, not in our dance or clothing because we don't have a Singaporean dance and we don't have a Singaporean dress sense (the SIA girl thing doesnt count!!!)
~In wanting to put up a cultural show, I realized we didnt have anything to perform- no dance, so song (since most of our songs are not something uniquely us, its very influenced by other cultures). Americans are way more kiasu. When I wanted to check into the dorms, they were there like 2 hours before check in time although there was an 8 hour check in period. Why? They all wanted to "chope" the better bed....and yes, they are really rude too, some of them.

But being abroad has made me realize more about who I am. I have never felt more Singaporean.
