PSC Scholar in trouble..nanny society

Its odd how something you thought was personal or at least only among friends, is displayed to the world the moment you stumble and fall. A blog is a diary, kinda. Of course it is a fool who thinks that its a REAL diary (go get a REAL diary with lock and key if you really want). But people do expect to be able to put their thoughts on it with some freedom. Or so we think. Well, we complain that the Singapore Government is a nanny but think about it, so are we.

About the recent scandal over the PSC scholar who put racist comments on his blog, wouldn't you say that its a little overblown? Who doesn't have a few friends who likes to make these racist jokes, IN FRONT of friends of that race. While I don't do it, because I think it insensitive, I do have friends who make Chinese, Indian or Malay jokes in front of the person of that race. And everyone just laughs it off. Thats what friends are for. So while I may not agree with such behavior, I do think that getting all riled over it is ridiculous.

I don't even think it should be an issue of whether the guy is a PSC scholar or not. True, he will be a leader in the future snd I suppose it is worrying, but shouldn't we clarify the situation first? LEts just seem him as a person. An ordinary person. Scholar or not. If we knew or had known that he was just making a joke amongst friends, would we be as angry? Scholar or not is not sufficiently important to criticize the govt selection process. After all, it does not matter if the person is a scholar, shouldn't this be more an issue of society? Our multi racial society?

And my goodness are we nanny. We can't even let someone have space to voice his opinions and thoughts? So there are racist people everywhere. How do we even know whos not? There are more who are probably silent because the extremmity of their opinions could possibly not be condoned in our society. What then, do we start digging into people's brains?

I say leave the poor chap alone. Unless he is a serial racist or to be more precise, he makes racist comments over and over again on his blog. How many of Singaporeans out there have actually not made a single racist joke or comment in his or her life? Who are we to comment when I would say most of us probably have?
